Rossland Secondary School Teacher/ Advisor - Bernie Hofmann

(B.PE - Outdoor Pursuits, B.Ed. - Biology and PE, M.A. - Curriculum and Instruction)

Mr. Hofmann has been working with youth for over 25 years in a variety of capacities. As a specialist in outdoor and environmental education, Bernie has led youth in summer and winter multi-day wilderness adventures. His teaching career has taken him as far away as Japan.

In addition to teaching in the public education system, Bernie has worked as a school and district administrator with a particular focus on new and innovative programs and projects. He shares his passion for the outdoors and travel with his wife and two children having recently completed a family year long round-the-world journey.

Rossland Secondary School Teacher/ Advisor - Nicola Kuhn

(B.A - English, B.Ed. - English and French, ESL Diploma)


Nicola Kuhn has thirteen years of secondary teaching experience in B.C. high schools, specializing in English, Socials Studies and French. Her teaching career has taken her to some of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the province: from Bella Coola, to Golden, and on to Rossland. Needless to say, much of her spare time is spent rock climbing, skiing and mountain biking.

Nicola is the librarian at Rossland Secondary School and is responsible for instructing Academy students with their language courses.

Black Jack Nordic Academy Head Coach - Dave Wood

(NCCP Level 4)

Dave Wood began his career coaching the BC team, later becoming the Canada National Development Team coach in Canmore. Dave was the Canada National Team Head Coach for many years, recognized for Canada's unprecedented results on the world stage and at the Olympics.

Born in Vancouver, Dave now lives in Rossland with his wife. Dave believes in a strong dryland training program through the spring and summer to set athletes up for success during their season.

Red Mountain Freeski Academy Director / Head Coach - Mark Impey

(CSIA Level 4 and Level 4 Course Conductor; CSCF Level 3 and Level 1 Course Conductor)

Mark is one of the most respected ski professionals in Canada and is a past Western Program Director of the Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance. Mark is president of Canadian Ski Quest and brings to the Academy a comprehensive ski instructor and ski race coaching background, as well as a life long career in the ski industry. His career has landed him on the slopes all over the world including North and South America, Europe and Asia.

Red Mountain Freeski Academy Coach - Neal Ross-Ross

(CSIA Level 3; CSIA Park and Pipe; CSFA Level 1)


Neal moved to Rossland in 2008 from Eastern Canada, where he specialized in steep bumps through the trees when there was no powder to be found.

Neal has been coaching for 8 years, 3 of which at Red Mountain Resort. In addition, he has 3 years experience competing in freestyle moguls in Eastern Canada (Ontario and Quebec).

Neal recently joined the Academy in 2010 to accompany Mark and the Freeski team in training and while away at competitions.


Red Mountain Racers Head Coach - Phil Patterson

(CSIA Level 2, CSCF Level 3 High Performance)

Phil Patterson is in his 19th season coaching, 15 of those coaching the Red Mountain Racers. He has also worked with Academy racers since the program inception. Phil has worked with skiers of all ages including Nancy Green, K1, K2 FIS and Masters athletes. He was an Ontario Ski Team member from 1989-1991.

Phil lives with his family in Rossland  and is continually inspired by the athletic outdoor lifestyle the community promotes, the ideal environment for aspiring young skiers according to him. His hobbies include mountain biking, canoeing, camping, hiking, ski touring, and freeskiing with friends and family.

By working in the snowboard industry for the past 20 years Chris has had the opportunity to work with some of Canada's top snowboard athletes. Currently he is the Head Coach for the BC Snowboard Cross team developing Canada’s next Olympic hopefuls. This job has taken him all over the world to train his athletes and get the opportunity to coach at the World Cup, X Games and International levels. Chris works closely with the coaches to insure all the NSST programs are receiving the top level coaching the athletes need. With his position of head coach Chris has been selected to be one of the Canadian Developmental group of coaches working closely with the Canadian Snowboard Federation.
 
Previous to coaching the BC Snowboard Cross team Chris has worked with the SFU Snowboard Team and worked with developing and training Race coaches as a learning facilitator. He continues to assist the CSCP in developing the race coaching material to help train new and current coaches. As well as developing other coaches Chris is continuing his personal coach development by working towards to completing his level 4 NCCP certification.

Kootenay Snowboard Academy Head Coach - Connor Martin

(CSIA Level 3; CSIA Park and Pipe; CSFA Level 1)


Connor's professional experience in Snowboarding includes multi-discipline competitions, coaching, teaching, and staff training. He has been certified by the CASI since 1996. Since that time he has attended workshops and courses by the Canadian Snowboard Federation and National Coaching Certification programs. His work experience includes: coaching and training for Crested Butte in Colorado, Whistler Blackcomb, and the North Shore Snowboard Team in Vancouver. Other valuable experience includes working with the First Nations Snowboard Team, Capillano College Snowboard Team, Pro Ride Whistler, and is currently coaching the Kootenay Riders.

With 18 Years of experience in the sport of snowboarding Connor Martin offers coaching on all aspects of competitive snowboarding including slopestyle, halfpipe, boardercross, and alpine racing. "My goal in coaching is to provide young athletes with solid fundamentals and life skills surrounding the sport."

 

Red Mountain Academies Core Coordinator - Kristi Calder

 

(B.Comm, CASI Level 1)

Kristi Calder moved to Rossland in 2004 from Ontario. Armed with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and several years experience in marketing and business development, Kristi coordinates the Core Program with Red Academies.

In her spare time Kristi enjoys traveling, skiing, snowboarding, biking and hiking with her husband and young daughters.

Sport Physiotherapist - Damien Moroney

Damien has a long history of providing physiotherapy services to a variety of athletes including the B2TEN Olympic Development Program, the Red Bull Canada High Performance Athletes, the Montreal Canadians, Cirque du Soleil and PGA touring professionals.

Damien is passionate about youth and sport, and provides various injury prevention physiotherapy sessions to the Academy athletes during the fall, prior to their season start.

Sport Nutritionist / Scientist - Dr. Delia Roberts


 

The winner of 3 scientific congress awards for outstanding scientific
research, Delia Roberts received her doctorate in Medical Science
(specialization: Exercise Biochemistry) from the University of Calgary.

Dr. Roberts’ thesis research was the cornerstone of the altitude
training program used by Longtrack Speedskating and Swimming Canada and many of Canada’s top athletes including gold medalists Catriona LeMay-Doan, Geatan Boucher, Mark Tewksbury, Carolyn Waldo, Michelle Cameron; silver medalists Susan Auch, Marianne Limpert; and bonze medalists Curtis Myden; Andrea Nugent, and Kevin Overland. Her involvement with applied sport science included attending 3 Olympic Games, 3 World Aquatic Championships, and 3 World Speedskating Championships in the capacity of team Sport Scientist.

Dr. Roberts provides a variety of services for Academy athletes
including nutrition information sessions and the development of meal plans. Dr. Roberts creates and overseas the sport specific dryland programs that the Academy athletes follow, and works with our coaches to help them properly monitor athlete training.
